We got review code on release day. Need for Speed: Heat takes the podium by default. We got Rivalsthe one where you could play as the cops.
Now we have Heata reboot of a reboot of a reboot. During the day you participate in sanctioned race events for cash. The two feed into each other. You need money to buy better parts for your car, but can only buy those parts if you have the reputation, thus forcing you to pinball back and forth between official and illegal events. Artificial though it may be, Need for Speed: Heat thus provides some structure to the upgrade path—which is usually cut short in Forza by saving judiciously and then buying all the best parts in one go, skipping the intermediary steps.
That said, Heat is a major improvement for Need for Speed.

And you can strip all the good parts off an old car and reuse them elsewhere, which makes the upgrade process feel less limiting than even the Forza Horizon version. Running on Frostbite 3, Heat loves showing off by having it rain every five minutes or so. It has billboards to crash through and items to collect. It has circuit races and sprint races and drifting events.
It has an extensive car customization system, with layered decals and modular parts. To its credit, Ghost Games keeps trying to fold a story into Need for Speed. That theoretically differentiates the series from Forza Horizonwhich has retreaded the race-because-racing-is-cool Horizon Festival aesthetic four times now. And the further I went, the less daring the setup seemed. The characters are all stock racing game archetypes, the story beats overly familiar. Copy the latter-era Fast and the Furious films instead, lean into the globe-trotting crime cabals and over-the-top stunts.

All of the same details are in exactly the same place and appear just as crisp. However, there does seem to be slightly more aliasing in Need for Speed Heat, which is odd considering they both utilize the same Temporal Anti-Aliasing method.
Both Need for Speed Payback and Heat offer large open-ended environments to race around in — but the choice of location is drastically different. Need for Speed Heat on the other-hand — takes pace in a fictional version of Miami — with bright beaches, some classic 80s inspired architecture, and lots of rural cliffs and farmland off to the east. But despite this potentially more colorful — lively locale, Need for Speed Heat feels almost lifeless. Textures however, have been improved upon a great deal.
Things like grass, roads, trees, and even small things like fire hydrants and traffic lights have all seen a nice bump to their polygon count and texture resolution.
Heat offers some fantastic reflective surfaces throughout its game world, from its many vehicles and shop windows, to its large water surfaces and beautifully done wet environments during and after rainy weather.
However, Need for Speed payback does boast a full dynamic time of day system, allowing for more variable lighting conditions. Heat only offers static lighting effects, with a few different randomize preset conditions selected whenever the player decides to flip between night or day.
It feels like a step back, though it does seem to be done for the sake of benefiting the design of the gameplay mechanics. The lighting still functions about the same, with minimal volumetric properties but still some decent godray implementation, and the new reflective surfaces really help make the experience feel more immersive than before.
Because the lighting is now static, Ghost Games were able to improve the shadow quality of environmental objects significantly, with softer edges that appear more natural. Unfortunately, the nighttime shadow effects are still disappointing, as street lights still fail to cast shadows of the players vehicle.
Though daytime shadow projects of player vehicles appear more diffused and realistic this time around, and the shadow render distance has been extended. Damage also appears to be just as arcade-like as it was before, with the vehicles requiring several big hits to be destroyed, though Need for Speed Heat does offer a ton more dynamic physics based props to smash through, including large trees that typically stop racers dead in their tracks in arcade racing games.
First off, the separate vehicle classes from Payback have been removed — meaning you no longer need to choose between street racing, offroading, or drift cars to compete in events. In fact, Need for Speed Heat starting vehicle roster is significantly larger than Need for Speed Paybacks — and even features some cool classic cars to race around in, inspired heavily by the older need for speed games. One of the biggest complaints made about Payback was its implementation of randomized loot upgrades for vehicles, making it a chore to improve vehicle stats.
Thankfully, this has been removed entirely — and players now simply need to rank up their racer with reputation points and earn money to purchase the upgrades they want. Instead, players can manually select when they race, with cash being rewarded for participating in daytime events, while reputation is typically awarded for competing in illegal nighttime races. On top of this, late-night races also draw the attention of the local police, who can interrupt races and can even be bribed with money to back off.
To encourage players to participate in these night time events, players can earn bonus reputation points by completing more race and evading the police, but will need to secure these points by safely escaping to an unlocked safehouse — adding a sort of survival twist to the experience. The changes made certainly add a more oldschool feel to the experience — and remove the annoying randomized nature of the previous game and cut out a lot of the unnecessary back and forth required with the different vehicle classes.
Need for Speed Heat offers a number of technical improvements, including improved texture resolution, higher quality reflective surfaces, and some interesting changes to the gameplay design.
Though with the removal of the dynamic time of day, and a sizable decrease to the amount of pedestrian and random traffic, the world does feel a bit less lively. But, what do you guys think? Do you think Need for Speed Heat is an improvement?

It all sounds good on paper. There is a lack of polish — close draw distances and pop-in, cars visibly spawning and bouncing at the start line, weird audio issues, the list goes on. No matter what else the game does well, all these issues make the whole thing feel rushed and barely finished.
Palm City is a varied open-world racing environment, though, again, it does seem to lack character. The strongest reactions I had to my surroundings were in the parts that most evoked Rockport, from the sainted Need for Speed : Most Wanted — a tunnel in Frontera Hills or the boardwalk in downtown.

But who is willing to get out their wallets for mere competency, especially in a year with so many strong releases? Despite the plausible narrative — Palm City is home to the SpeedBreakers Festival, legitimate racing on road courses by day and extracurricular activities for strivers and attention-getters at night — the truth is, arcade racers at the end of this decade are much less necessary for the enjoyment of exotic cars than they were in the middle of the last.
I dominated every race by nearly two seconds from there on. Need for Speed Heat also introduces drift racing toward the end of its series of introductory missions, which still carried me deep into the levels of my legitimate and underworld racing career. Need for Speed Heat feels like one of those shooters with generous aim-assistance and enemy AI, knowing that its players want to feel like a badass, and doing just enough to get them there, despite the lack of any real skill or progression.
If you want to go fast and win, Heat has you covered. If you want to grow as a racer, look elsewhere. Players are given the choice of racing in a solo or multiplayer world. At night, racing against human drivers gave the set events some variety, although it was tough to tell if it was because of their skill or the interference of random oncoming traffic. This is a fine thing and a strong differentiator.
With my tricked-out Lotus, I could dust one cop as soon as the chase had begun. Two required emergency-braking and physics-defying u-turns to lose them. Three cops, you may as well give up.
So the impossible odds of a multi-car chase, versus the low stakes of getting busted, conspire to create a bland pursuit-and-evasion stage of the game. This is supposed to distinguish Need for Speed Heatbut instead makes its most epic chases seem chorelike and interminable. Need for Speed Heat launched Nov. Vox Media has affiliate partnerships. Like in Forza Horizon, even stone walls crumble and trees splinter if you careen off course. Fewer encounters with momentum-killers helped to keep my pace high and my pulse higher. The city itself is the big highlight here — the surrounding countryside is a little unmemorable — but there are a few other cool spots, including a mini Cape Canaveral-style space centre, a fun abandoned racing oval, and a big container yard begging for a shred session.
The neon-drenched, Miami-inspired map is a great fit for the classic Need for Speed motif. Daytime Palm City is defined by regular, sanctioned street racing on marked courses for cash payouts, while night racing is all about illegal, underground racing and running from the fuzz to build up rep points. Heat looks a bit plainer in daylight — overall, the environment looks better whipping by at miles an hour than under intense scrutiny — but the racing is decent.
Night is absolutely the superior visual experience, especially when it rains. The racing is also more exciting, with traffic to avoid and more aggressive cops to deal with. They are a fair bit tougher, though; certainly until you can secure the best upgrades. Chases are definitely biased more towards the cops now. Also, the Busted Bar timer that ticks down to an automatic loss is absolute baloney.
And although the cars look best in the rain like the rest of the world itselfgreat little touches like animated raindrops trickling down side panels are a bit undermined by the fact nobody animated the windscreen wipers. The good news is Heat lets us toggle it back to brake-to-drift, which allows a driver to stay mashed on the gas and just quickly pump the brake to get sideways.
It feels more intuitive to me, like a quick dip of the clutch to spike the revs. Drifting feels a bit slower in Heat than Payback but you have more control of car angle, which has made the drift events quite enjoyable. Good riddance, I say.
Want a part? Buy it. A big new addition is engine swaps, which are great because they can increase the overall potential horsepower of cars that previously hit a premature performance ceiling. But even better than that is exhaust tuning, which allows fine tuning of the already excellent exhaust notes available.
This is some straight-up car geek catnip and I am all about it. Elsewhere, the livery editor remains top notch and stance options are still here for those of you who like their cars to look like Herbie on the brink of death; you know, after he got tossed off that cruise ship and dragged out of a river.
